STI Screening and Treatment
Youth require ongoing education on the consequences of unprotected sex, including contracting a sexually transmitted infection (STI). Therefore, as a clinical provider, it is crucial for you to capture a youth’s sexual history, follow the necessary treatment plan, and uphold proper patient confidentiality.
Local, state, and national public health resources provide guidance to individualize each screening. Treatment guidelines change frequently and sometimes vary state-to-state as well. This document supports providers with an outline of the next steps and important considerations to ensure that youth receive appropriate STI screening and treatment in a respectful environment.
This resource was included in the Sexual and Reproductive Health Toolkit for Adolescent Providers, a resource designed for healthcare care providers but is applicable to many other providers, including school-based and youth program providers. You can learn more about Toolkit here.
